Assessment Task: Planning a Trip to BETT in London

Scenario
You and your classmates have been given the opportunity to attend the BETT Exhibition in London (ExCeL London). Your task is to plan the journey from your college to the event, making sure you organise travel, time, and expenses. You will also need to budget for meals and snacks during the trip.

Your Task

1. Route Planning
   Use online travel applications to map out your route. Examples include:

   • TfL Go (Transport for London) – live bus, tube and train updates

   • National Rail Enquiries – train times, fares and routes

   • Trainline – book and check train journeys and fares

   • Google Maps – plan multi-step routes (walking, bus, tube, train)

   • Citymapper – journey planner showing fastest and cheapest routes

   • UK Bus Checker – live bus timetables and route info

   You must include start and end times, travel methods, and estimated duration of each leg of the journey.

2. Expenses

   • Research and calculate the cost of travel (bus fare, train ticket, Oyster card/contactless).

   • Estimate lunch and snack costs (e.g. supermarket meal deals, drinks, snacks).

   • Present a total daily budget.

3. Presentation of the Plan

   • Create a digital or written itinerary with times, stops, and changes.

   • Use a digital checklist or timetable app to show when each part of the trip takes place.

   • Provide at least one alternative route in case of delays.

Evidence to Submit

• Route map (screenshot or digital copy from an app).

• Timetable/itinerary with times and stops.

• Cost breakdown (travel + food).

• Short written explanation (150–200 words) on why your plan is efficient and realistic.

Worked Example: Croydon College to BETT (ExCeL London)

Route (using Google Maps + TfL Go + Citymapper):

• Walk 5 minutes to East Croydon Station.

• Train: East Croydon → London Bridge (15 mins).

• Jubilee Line: London Bridge → Canning Town (15 mins).

• DLR: Canning Town → Custom House (6 mins).

• Walk 3 minutes to ExCeL entrance.

Journey Time: 50–55 minutes.

Expenses:

• Travel (Oyster/contactless daily cap Zones 1–6): £14.90

• Lunch/snacks: £10.00 (meal deal £4.50, drink £3.50, snack £2.00)

• Total Day Cost: £24.90

Sample Itinerary:

• 08:15 – Meet at Croydon College entrance

• 08:20 – Walk to East Croydon Station

• 08:30 – Train to London Bridge

• 08:50 – Jubilee Line to Canning Town

• 09:10 – DLR to Custom House

• 09:20 – Arrive at ExCeL London

Alternative Route: DLR from Bank Station if Jubilee Line is closed.
